Climb mountains - to collect tin and aluminum cans!

August 27, 2024

When I met Yulia, she told me about her dream - to climb Elbrus. Today, together with her and her best friend Sveta, we made this dream come true. Yulia is a physical education teacher and trainer by education, she has been going to the mountains for 6 years in the company of her best friend and little friend - Yorkshire terrier Teon. Climbing Elbrus - Yulia's first five-thousander, was not easy for her. She had to work hard to reach the top. But this did not scare Yulia, because she was used to walking in the mountains with a heavy backpack. Her backpack contains not only climbing equipment. It contains garbage collected during the route, left in the mountains by people indifferent to nature. In particular, Yulia collects discarded tin and aluminum cans.

Such cans have always been a big problem in the mountains, before all climbers ate food from metal cans. After eating, the cans were either thrown into the fire or buried in the ground, which did not contribute to their destruction. Mountains of cans accumulated at tent sites along the routes. Today, the problem of discarded aluminum cans from cola or energy drinks is much more acute; they are simply everywhere.

Yulia receives money for handing in cans for recycling. More for aluminum than for tin. To be fair, I will note that such a project does not bring in super profits, but it is just enough to fill up a car for a trip to the mountains.

Recently, a colleague of Yulia, knowing that she is a climber, gave her cans with a joke: "Here are more cans for your ascent of Everest." From this joke, the mission of the project was formed: to collect cans to pay for the trek to the Everest base camp (ascent of Everest itself is not in the plans yet, it is too expensive and difficult). Yulia's friends and acquaintances are now also helping to collect cans to make their friend's big dream come true - to see Everest from its foot. Some regularly call her with a request to pick up the accumulated cans, some bring them to her home themselves.

And Yulia continues to train to make her new dream come true, going to the mountains every weekend and ... collecting new abandoned cans on her routes through the forests and mountains.

Yulia, we wish you success, patience and the realization of your planned goal!
